Propolis is a resinous substance with a brownish-green coloration and
characteristic taste which is produced by bees when they collect buds and plant
resin. In the beehive it is used to prevent bacterial contamination, being
considered a natural antibiotic. It has been used by man ever since the most
remote times and has various uses as well. The chemical compounds most widely
known and studied in propolis are: flavonoids, terpenoids, aromatic acids,
aldeoids, alcohols, aliphatic acids, and ether-aminoacids, steroids, cinamic
acids, cafeic acids and querotene, etc.
